With the leaves turning and the air getting crisp, October brings all kinds of fun: pumpkin spice, Halloween décor, maybe a costume contest or two. But along with those seasonal perks come hazards and compliance risks that can haunt businesses if ignored. At Worksite, we believe in helping you stay ahead of those risks so your fall is full of treats, not tricks.
Here are some common fall (the season) safety hazards and HR pitfalls and how to avoid them.
1. Slips, Trips, and Falls from the Outdoors
The first culprit every fall: wet leaves, rain, frost in the early morning. Walkways, stairs, parking lots can all become slick.
What to do:
- Keep walkways, sidewalks, entrances clear of leaves and moisture.
- Use non-slip mats or rugs where water tends to pool.
- Ensure stairs and handrails are well-maintained, solid, stable.
- Post warning signs in areas that are wet or likely to be slippery.
2. Poor Lighting & Visibility
Days get shorter, and dusk comes earlier. Inadequate lighting in parking lots, walkways, building exteriors, or interior areas, such as stairwells, can contribute to accidents and even security issues.
What to do:
- Test and replace bulbs regularly.
- Ensure outdoor lighting works in early morning and early evening.
- Add lighting where shadows form or where visibility is low.
- For any outdoor workers, consider portable or task lighting.
3. HVAC, Air Quality & Illness Prevention
Fall often marks the transition into colder weather and the beginning of flu season. Poor indoor air quality or malfunctioning heating/cooling systems can exacerbate illness, which means time off, reduced productivity, and morale issues.
What to do:
- Perform preventive maintenance of HVAC systems; clean ducts, change filters.
- Inspect for leaks or drafts; ensure heating systems work safely.
- Provide proper ventilation in enclosed spaces.
- Promote the use of hand sanitizers and encourage sick employees to stay home.
4. Seasonal Events & Holiday HR Issues
Halloween and autumn often bring company events like costume contests, parties, décor, and maybe even more decorations outside. These can be fun, but also create liability or HR exposure if not managed well.
What to be mindful of:
- Safe décor. Ensure decorations don’t obstruct exits or hallways or create fire risks.
- Costume policies. If your employees wear costumes, ensure they are safe (no tripping, clear vision, making sure loose fabric is secure and away from machinery, etc.). Clarify any expectations in advance.
- Event planning. If serving food or alcoholic/non‐alcoholic drinks, check any relevant liability insurance, and confirm that your policies are followed.
- Employee schedules. Fall also brings back‐to‐school issues, holidays, or changing daylight; employees may request PTO or need flexible hours. Be proactive in scheduling.
5. HR Policy Refresh & Compliance Check
With the year winding down, fall is a good time to review policies, ensure compliance, and get ahead of end‐of‐year rushes.
What to review:
- OSHA and safety regulations applicable in your state: Confirm all training, inspections, record‐keeping are up to date.
- Employee handbook updates: Note any changes in state law, leave laws, wage & hour, etc.
- Performance reviews and goal setting: Autumn is often when companies begin reviewing mid‐year performance and setting goals for next year.
- PTO / holiday schedule clarity: Ensure everyone knows what holidays they will be paid for, how accruals work, any cutoff dates for using PTO, etc.
6. Mental Health & Wellbeing
Shorter days and colder weather can affect mood, energy, and stress. Seasonal affective symptoms, pressure from year‐end deliverables, and balancing holidays and family can all contribute to a decline in mental health.
What to do:
- Offer flexibility where possible: remote work, flexible hours, etc.
- Encourage breaks, check in on employees, provide resources (EAPs, counseling).
- Celebrate wins: fall events, team lunches, small things that bring people together.
